App Review
Hello World
Welcome to Import Feedback!
To give a brief introduction, I've been an iOS developer for over a decade. I truly enjoy working within the iOS space, and it's amazing what we can do with apps over the years. I've worked in several industries and seen my fair share of different products and customers. I created this newsletter as a way to give back to the community and provide free reviews and feedback for the smaller apps on the App Store. While it may seem obvious to some, there are countless things we indie developers can do to improve our apps. Whether it's changing a font, modifying a user flow, or building a new feature, there's always something we can do to upgrade and earn more happy users.
Let's get to it. I don't have a specific format for these issues yet, so we'll just go with the flow. I'm thinking of providing a tip at the beginning and using that as a theme for the rest of the issue, followed by a couple of reviews. Note that I'll only be providing feedback for small apps and teams, and will most likely disregard the big players on the App Store.
I've done some short 5-10 minute reviews on Reddit, and those seem to be well-received. I got tons of comments and DMs from other developers and product owners thanking me for providing a fresh perspective on their apps. Anyways so let's get to it. I don't have a specific format on how I want to do these issues yet, so we'll just go with the flow. I'm thinking I can provide some sort of tip at the beginning and use that as a theme for the rest of the issue and then provide a couple of reviews to follow up. Do note that I'll be only providing feedback for small apps and teams, and will most likely disregard the big players on the App Store.
I've done some short 5-10 minute reviews on Reddit and those seem to be well received. I got tons of comments and DMs from other developers and product owners thanking me for providing a fresh perspective on their apps. This first issue will consists of reviews I done before on Reddit, future issues will involve me picking random apps on the App Store and doing reviews.
Let's finally start!
Theme: Grammar
Proper grammar is necessary for credibility, readability, communication, and clarity. You would be surprised by how many typos I've come across on an App Store page and throughout any given app. Please spell check, people! It can make the difference between your app looking well-polished or amateurish. These reviews will include at least 1 feedback/comment in regards to the theme. I'll always link their app/website as well to allow others to check it out!
Take control of your finances with MONIAC, the all-in-one expense tracking app. With its user-friendly interface and powerful features, MONIAC simplifies the process of managing your money.
First impressions:
- The App Store screenshot and onboarding just reads awkward. "lets make the just perfect app for you..."
- Limit the dollar amount a user can put in. If it gets too big, the other text labels shrink and will have an impact on the user's experience.
- I like the micro animations when adding things to the History tab, +1.
- The color scheme works well and I love that you support dark mode.
Overall, Moniac has some work to do. Keep it up!
Orderly connects to your email to automatically track every order, how long you have to return them, and schedule home pick ups for your returns
First impressions:
- Great landing page, straight to the point.
- App Store Page screenshots could be better. The text aren't align, I think it's also a bit hard to read because of the white on pink color choice.
- Onboarding looks great.
- I didn't notice any obvious typos or grammatical mistakes, great job proofreading.
Bugs:
- Right after authentication, rotate your device. You'll notice that the app can go into landscape mode which causes the UI to be broken.
Improvements:
- I would use a native menu picker to replace the triple dot right bar button item on the home screen. The current UI for it looks poorly done.
- I would either hide the different sections "on the way, delivered, etc" or add an empty state view with a CTA to add an email.
- Connect email account is a bit misleading as it implies that I can connect ANY email account. Upon tap, it only opens Gmail.
Overall, great job and keep it up!
Introducing Synthia 4.0: The Ultimate AI Virtual Assistant Embark on an extraordinary journey with Synthia, the groundbreaking AI virtual assistant chat app powered by ChatGPT & GPT-4o.
First impressions:
- The app logo looks great.
- The App Store screenshots are clear, indicating it’s an AI app.
- Don’t request push notifications right away. Why do you need them for this app?
- The app’s navigation and UI/UX do not meet even the basic standards set by Apple. It's uniquely bad. Where do I start? On the first screen, I couldn't swipe left or right and had to tap on the page indicator. When I tapped on a prompt, it not only started a text-to-speech reading, which I didn't expect, but an ad also appeared. So, I had both an ad playing and text-to-speech running simultaneously—great experience, 0/10.
- When I backgrounded the app and opened it again, I was shown another full-screen ad. There were also banner ads everywhere.
To be quite honest, I deleted the app after this because the experience was frustrating, and there’s nothing unique about this app other than the aim to earn a few cents from spamming ads.
Conclusion
That's it for the first issue of Import Feedback! I hope you enjoyed reading it and found something new to learn. Do you think three app reviews per issue are enough, or is it too much? What else would you like me to discuss? Want to submit your app for review? Email me at kenny@importfeedback.com!
